What happened in Venezuela?

Venezuela is facing a devastating humanitarian crisis after two powerful earthquakes struck the country on June 24, causing widespread destruction across several communities. Hundreds of lives have been lost, thousands have been injured, and countless families have been displaced as rescue and recovery efforts continue. The South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce stands in solidarity with the people of Venezuela during this difficult time. Albizu University Offers Free Mental Health Services to Venezuelan Community

Albizu University in Miami has announced that mental health professionals and supervised doctoral trainee clinicians are available through the Albizu Clinic to provide free brief post-disaster psychological interventions, emotional support, coping strategies, and referrals for ongoing mental health care for anyone experiencing distress, grief, anxiety, or uncertainty following the earthquakes in Venezuela.

“As a university that proudly serves a large Venezuelan population, we stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and with our students, patients, alumni, and community members whose loved ones have been affected by the devastating tragedy,” said Dr. Andel V. Nicasio, Clinic Director of the Albizu Clinic. “Our faculty and supervised doctoral trainee clinicians are here to provide emotional support, practical coping strategies, and a sense of community during this difficult time.”

According to the Per Research Center’s analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey, approximately 474,000 Venezuelans live in Florida, more than 40% of the nation’s Venezuelan population, with about 254,000 residing in the Miami metropolitan area.
