Timeline
1966-1976
- 1966 — Foundation of the Institution: Dr. Carlos Albizu Miranda founded the first independent professional school of psychology in North America.
- 1966 — Creation of the Original Institutional Logo: The institution's original logo was designed and adopted.
- 1967–1968 — First Academic Year Enrollment: Approximately twenty students enrolled during the inaugural academic year.
- 1972 — Official Approval of the Caribbean Center for Advanced Studies: Approved and registered as a nonprofit corporation.
- 1975–1976 — Financial Crisis and Institutional Recovery: Period of financial hardship followed by institutional recovery.
1976-1986
- 1977 — Relocation to Santurce Facilities: Beginning of a new era of rebuilding and growth.
- 1979 — MSCHE Accreditation: First private Puerto Rican institution offering a Clinical Psychology doctorate.
- Late 1970s — Roman Baldorioty de Castro School Restoration: Historic Old San Juan building restored.
- 1980 — Miami Institute of Psychology Established: Expansion of institutional operations into Miami.
- Early 1980s — Miami Operations Relocated: Operations moved to the 300 SW 12th Avenue facility.
1986-1996
- 1988 — Launch of the PhD Program: Doctoral Program in General Psychology established.
- 1989 — Introduction of the Bachelor’s Program: Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology introduced.
- 1994 — APA Accreditation for San Juan Campus: Program received American Psychological Association accreditation.
- 1995 — APA Accreditation for Miami Campus: Program received American Psychological Association accreditation.
- 1996 — Institutional Expansion: Significant growth in clinical services, library resources, and student enrollment.
1996-2006
- 1999 — Miami Campus Expansion: Facilities expanded to support academic and program growth.
- 2000 — Transition to Carlos Albizu University: Official name adopted, reflecting institutional growth.
- Early 2000s — Governance Modernization: Administrative structures, policies, and management processes strengthened.
- Late 2000s — Reaccreditation and Innovation: Accreditations reaffirmed and educational innovation initiatives advanced.
2006-2016
- Late 2000s — Reaccreditation and Educational Innovation: Strengthens academic quality and institutional modernization.
- 2008 — Strategic Plan 2009–2013: Establishes goals for institutional growth and development.
- 2015 — The Mayagüez University Center was inaugurated. Albizu University expanded access to graduate education in western Puerto Rico with the opening of its Mayagüez University Center.
2016-2026
- Expansion into Emerging Fields: Cyberpsychology and technology-focused education introduced.
- Continued National Internship Success: Placements at nationally recognized institutions.
- Expansion of Community Services: Growth of mental health services and Albizu Clinics.
- 2024 —The Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology at Albizu University’s Mayagüez University Center received APA accreditation
- 2025 — 10-Year APA Reaccreditation: PsyD in Clinical Psychology earned renewed accreditation.
- January 2026 — Casa Albizu was accredited by the National Children’s Alliance as a Child Advocacy Center. Casa Albizu became the first Child Advocacy Center accredited by the National Children’s Alliance in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
