Master of Science in School Psychology

The Master of Science program contributes to the development of capable professionals who can carry out school-wide interventions aimed at improving the quality of life of those seeking help. It also prepares future school psychologists to manage the behavioral needs of children and adolescents who are going through social, academic, and emotional problems. In addition, students take part in a 1,200-hour internship in real school settings, working directly with school personnel and students from preschool to 21 years of age, focusing on the areas of prevention, education, collaboration, evaluation, intervention, research, planning, and consultation.

Program Highlights

  • Upon completion of their psychology degree, our graduate students can request to take the Puerto Rico Psychology Licensing Board Exam and become licensed school psychologists upon approval. Similarly, graduate students are encouraged to take other exams, such as the PRAXIS Exam (United States Licensing Exam).
  • Students completing the master’s program will graduate with the necessary skills to work as school psychologists in public and private schools, independent practice, hospitals, state departments of education, and other educational centers.
  • The program’s faculty members have experience in topics such as crisis management and prevention, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), coping skills, behavior modification, learning difficulties, and positive learning environments, among others.
  • Early in the program, students can interact with graduate students from other specialties through integrated development, educational courses, and clinics to experience a collaborative environment.

In Focus

  • The MS-SSP program is currently offered on mayaguez campus, online, and in a hybrid modality.
  • Our graduate program ponders the learning of competences based on the standards of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), but considering the social, intercultural, and intra-cultural needs, which allows our students easier mobility for local and international jobs.
  • The philosophy of Albizu University’s (AU) Master of Science in School Psychology program is guided by the NASP Model for Integrated and Comprehensive School Psychological Services, also known as the NASP Practice Model, which represents the official policy of the NASP regarding the provision of school psychological services. The practice model allows flexibility for agencies and professionals to develop policies and procedures that meet local and socio-cultural needs while providing sufficient specificity to ensure adequate and comprehensive service delivery.
