Albizu University’s Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology Program at the San Juan Campus is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). The Program prepares culturally responsive psychologists who integrate clinical practice and research to investigate and address mental health concerns, particularly those affecting underserved populations.
Its educational philosophy is dynamic, and integrated. Students progress through a balanced and interconnected sequence of didactic coursework, research opportunities, research practicum, clinical practicum, and supervised experiential training.
Program Goals
The Program follows a scientist-practitioner training model in which science and practice continually inform one another. Students learn to apply psychological science to clinical work, use evidence-based methods in assessment and intervention, approach clinical problems scientifically, and generate knowledge through research.
The Program has two overarching goals:
- To train students to create, conduct, and integrate research in clinical psychology in a culturally and ethically appropriate manner.
- To train students to apply psychological knowledge, assessment competencies, and clinical skills in the practice of psychology in a culturally and ethically appropriate manner.

Applicants must submit a completed graduate application by the deadline established in the Academic Calendar. Admission is selective and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. The Admissions Committee evaluates academic preparation, motivation, professional goals, cultural responsiveness, interpersonal readiness, research interests, and fit with an available faculty research mentor.
- A completed bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution. A degree in psychology or a related field is expected; applicants from other fields may be required to complete designated psychology prerequisite courses.
- A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3 on a 4.00 scale. Exceptional admission criteria may be considered in accordance with current University policy.
- Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended.
- Two recommendation letters using the University’s required format.
- A résumé or curriculum vitae and any additional materials required in the current application.
- Adequate reading, writing, and conversational proficiency in English and Spanish.
- An interview with the doctoral Admissions Committee.
- International applicants must submit an official evaluation of academic credentials from an authorized agency.
- Health, immunization, identity-verification, and background documentation required by current University and Puerto Rico regulations.

Program Highlights

- Mentorship model: students are matched with a research mentor based on shared research interests upon entry to the Program.
- Sequential and cumulative research practicum designed to support a second-year research project and doctoral dissertation.
- Sequential clinical practicum that increases in complexity and develop competencies in interviewing, case conceptualization, assessment, treatment planning, intervention, supervision, consultation, and interprofessional work.

- A 2,000-hour doctoral internship completed full-time over one year or part-time over two years in a Program-approved setting.

Our Clinical Psychology Doctoral program is offered on the San Juan campus.
This doctorate is APA accredited, which allows students the opportunity to complete an APA internship.
This program follows a mentoring model where students are assigned to a researcher-mentor based on similar research interests at the time of admission to the program. These mentors guide their students in the development of the necessary research competencies to complete their second-year research work and dissertation.
