Dr. Joseph M. Swingle, SLPD, ATACP, CCC-SLP

Joseph M. Swingle is a bilingual English-Spanish speech-language pathologist, assistive technology and augmentative and alternative communication (AT/AAC) specialist, educator, mentor, and Assistant Professor in the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program at Albizu University.

He has more than 20 years of experience across university, school, hospital, clinic, private practice, community-based, and international settings, including extensive experience with telepractice. His areas of expertise include AAC, culturally and linguistically responsive assessment and intervention, language disorders in children, clinical education and supervision, and family-centered care. Dr. Swingle’s research and scholarly interests focus on improving services for culturally and linguistically diverse individuals and families, particularly Spanish-speaking families of children with complex communication needs, as well as increasing diversity and inclusion within the communication sciences and disorders workforce.

He holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and speech-language pathology licenses in California, Florida, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. He is also a member of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and the United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

Research Interests: Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC); individuals with complex communication needs; culturally and linguistically responsive practices; multilingualism and multiculturalism; communication development in school-age children; family-centered intervention; and increasing diversity and inclusion within the communication sciences and disorders workforce.
