Current Title & Duties
Dr. Harrell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Albizu University. She received her B.S. in Speech Pathology & Audiology from Tennessee State University, an M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Mississippi, an EdS in Curriculum & Instruction from Lincoln Memorial University, and a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Central Florida. Dr. Harrell is also a Board-Certified Specialist in Child Language (BCS-CL) through the American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders.
Dr. Harrell has over 25 years of experience working with individuals who have disabilities. Before her career in academia, Dr. Harrell worked in public schools, skilled nursing facilities, early intervention, home health, private practice, long-term acute care, in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation, and Head Start.
Her areas of expertise and research include language and literacy disorders in children, reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition and intervention, cultural competence and humility in graduate education, and global issues in the field. Dr. Harrell also serves on boards and committees with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD).
Dr. Harrell also has extensive history collaborating with schools in Florida and Louisiana to increase vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension with middle and high school age students. Dr. Harrell also serves as a Board Member and Program Manager for curriculum development with Travel & GIVE, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that combines travel with addressing the needs of the people in local communities around the world through advocacy, education, and medical resources. She travels to Haiti and Kenya to provide therapy, training, and professional development to schools and orphanages.
