Strengthening Masters & Students Services 2022-2027
Director’s Welcome
Albizu University, San Juan Campus, received the award of federal funds Title V, Promoting Postbaccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans (PPOHA), with the award #P031M220058 for the years 2022-2027. The PPOHA Project Strengthening Masters & Students Services has support staff focused on paying attention to the needs of our graduate program students and faculty with two main initiatives. The new Center for Graduate Studies is one of the initiatives of this innovative project and includes expanding and strengthening services and supporting our students and faculty as objectives. With this initiative, we wish to contribute to the preparation of students for lifelong learning and train leading graduates in the specialty areas offered by the Albizu University, Campus of San Juan. Our second initiative is revising hybrid and online courses with an instructional designer and educational technology specialist and certification of our faculty in “Best practices for online/hybrid instruction.”

Project Description
Albizu University, San Juan Campus (AU) received on October 1, 2022, the approval, and a $3,000,000.00 budget for a project through the Promoting Postbaccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans (PPOHA) program to address our target population's need for accessible, high-quality postbaccalaureate higher education opportunities and support for degree completion and career preparation. AU will strengthen and expand its online/hybrid graduate school academic offerings, targeting updates for its Master of Science in Speech and Language Pathology (SLP), Master of Science in Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (A&ND), and a new Master of Science in Crisis Intervention (CI) programs.
AU will establish the infrastructure, resources, and services to support graduate students' academic progress, timely degree completion, and professional development.
Below are some of the services, events and resources of the PPOHA Project:
PPOHA-Instructional Design-Courses design and redesign
The Instructional Design initiative's primary objective is to expand and strengthen the service to graduate students and faculty, through the offering of hybrid and online courses; two programs are on schedule for the revised process: the master's degree in Autism and Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders and the master's degree in Speech and Language Pathology and a new master’s program in Crisis Intervention is in the process of design. Course design and redesign involves:
- creating beneficial and measurable learning outcomes,
- choosing effective teaching strategies and learning experiences,
- aligning assessment methods with course learning outcomes and
- revising the course syllabus.
The courses will be evaluated and reviewed with the standardized Quality Matters guide to enrich our teaching and learning process.
The instructional designer will support faculty in developing and reviewing the PPOHA Project participants' courses. Professional development is available with certifications in best teaching practices in the virtual modality, teaching strategies, and assessment in hybrid and fully online courses.
PPOHA Project-Graduate Student Center (CEG in Spanish)
The Graduate Studies Center (CEG) of the PPOHA Project at the San Juan Campus will be located as a support service in our campus library. The objective of the CEG is to provide a series of activities that support graduate students in their academic progress, in completing their degree within the established time, and in their professional development. Also, it will provide support and training to the faculty of these programs, offering exciting and updated workshops. The students and the faculty will find the CEG spaces equipped to study, collaborate in teams, and access technological resources.
Online resources for the development of professional skills
The objective is to support graduate-level student in the knowledge and professional skills required to perform their functions.
Online resources for developing research skills.
The CEG will contribute to developing skills in the research area that include techniques, documentation, and interpretation of the data collected for success in their academic and professional work.
Online resources for developing skills for an entrepreneur.
The graduate-level student will receive entrepreneurship training, thus creating opportunities for professional development.
Boot Camp for Students and Faculty
The Boot Camp for new students will offer service and support focused on developing research skills, writing skills in English, and social-emotional skills so that the student is successful in their studies. Faculty will participate in training related to Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and teaching strategies in active learning.
Student Research Internship Program
This program is aimed at graduate-level students to achieve a research internship with counterparts in the United States and Puerto Rico. The topics of these investigations will be aligned with the areas of behavioral sciences, speech and language pathology, and other related disciplines.
Professional Career Seminars
Graduate-level students will have the opportunity to receive seminars that support them on the path to their profession and will have an experienced mentor and peer support to help identify academic and career options.
Graduate Students Fellowships
Financial aid of $45,000 for students per year.
