Current Title & Duties

In her capacity of Program Director, Dr. Hernandez provides leadership in counselor education, coordination of the counseling program, operations of the program and oversight in the pursuit of academic excellence. Dr. Hernandez’ focus points include inclusivity in the learning environment amongst students and faculty, engaging in outreach activities in the community especially as it relates to mental health, leading assessment needs and strategic planning for academic excellence and accreditation as well as managing special projects for student development and engagement.

Biography

Dr. Hernandez has several years of experience in the field of clinical mental health counseling, trauma, working with various mental health needs including addiction, teaching in person and online, and serves currently as a licensed mental health counselor and a qualified supervisor. As a licensed mental health counselor, she provides psychotherapy services to adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Dr. Hernandez’ areas of expertise include but are not limited to eating disorders, addiction, trauma, stage of life changes, depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, relationship issues, and self-development. She has significant experience providing teaching and supervision in the online format to create an engaging and enriching educational experience for adult learners.

Dr. Hernandez is committed to creating and maintaining a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is committed to leading with informed, respectful, and empathetic practices that create an environment of safety, inclusivity, and growth.

Research / Research Interests

Dr. Hernandez’ research interests include emotional intelligence, counselor education, counselors in training, professional dispositions, personal/professional development, trauma, multicultural competency, and counseling competence. Dr. Hernandez has presented at a wide variety of conferences including the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES).

Academics, Education, Certifications

Dr. Hernandez is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and a Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor for Mental Health Counselors in the state of Florida. She is also a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and is EMDR/Trauma trained by EMEDRIA,

Dr. Hernandez received her Bachelors of Arts in Biology from the University of Miami, and her Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University. She received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP accredited program at Walden University.

She is a member of the American Counselors Association (ACA), the Association for Counseling Education and Supervision (ACES), the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC), CSI Sigma Iota (CSI) an international honor society that values academic and professional excellence in counseling, the Golden Key Honor Society, and the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS).
