Título actual y deberes

Dr. Miller serves as full-time Professor and Program Accreditation Manager for the Online Master’s of Science in Counseling at Albizu University-Miami. Her primary activities are designing and teaching graduate level counseling courses online, mentoring and providing academic advising to graduate students, presenting on counseling and communication-related topics at professional conferences, serving on campus committees and professional boards, collecting program assessment data, and writing a self-study to be submitted to the national counseling program accreditor.

Biografía

Dr. Miller has over 20 years of experience as a graduate-level counselor educator in urban and rural communities in southern and midwestern states. She has taught hearing, Deaf and hard of hearing, and culturally diverse graduate students in the university classroom and online since 2001. In addition to teaching, she served in leadership as a counseling program coordinator for nine years, and as a counseling department chair for six years. American Sign Language (ASL) is her second language.

Dr. Miller was lead author and/or co-author on five Federal long-term training grant applications, four of which were awarded totaling over $4 million dollars to directly support master-level rehabilitation counseling students. She has served as a lead author on two counseling program accreditation self-studies, both of which resulted in renewal of accreditation status.

As a practitioner, for a period of five years Dr. Miller provided personal, mental health, transitional, and career/work counseling and support services to Deaf youths and adults in private not-for-profit community counseling organizations, and in state school and correctional settings. She specializes in partnering with clients who are Deaf, hard of hearing, and/or have multiple disabilities and diagnoses, with an emphasis on accessibility and accommodation.

Dr. Miller is dedicated to the principles of social justice, including access to resources, equity, participation, diversity, and human rights. Her approach to counseling integrates humanistic and postmodern therapy and technique to address each client’s specific situation and perspectives. In the virtual classroom, she endeavors to include and engage each student through universal design for learning (UDL) and routine communication.

Investigación / Intereses de investigación

Dr. Miller’s research interests include due process for linguistically diverse deaf individuals involved with the criminal justice system, access to and use of American Sign Language interpreting services, access to mental health systems, and teaching and research in counselor education. She has published 19 peer-reviewed articles on these and related topics.

Dr. Miller is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Kansas, a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), a National Certified Counselor, (NCC), and a Board-Certified Telemental Health (BC-TMH) provider.

Dr. Miller earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and minored in Women’s Studies at University of Alaska Anchorage, and her Master of Education in Rehabilitation Counseling with Deaf Individuals from Western Oregon University, a formerly CORE-accredited institution. She completed her Ed.D. in Deaf Education at Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas.

She completed a graduate certificate in E-Learning & Online Teaching in 2016.

She is a member of the American Counselors Association (ACA), the Association for Counseling Education and Supervision (ACES), the National Rehabilitation Counseling Association (NRCA), and ADARA: Professionals Networking for Excellence in Service Delivery for Individuals who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
