Irma Barron, Ph.D.
Professor and Practicum Coordinator - Doctoral Program Psychology

As a full-time Faculty member, Dr. Barron is the Practicum Coordinator in the Albizu University doctoral program in psychology. She is responsible for the overall supervision of practicum students and secures and maintains a practicum placement sites network. Dr. Barron specialization is in couples and family systems and teaches the couples and family therapy class. She also serves as academic advisor and mentor.

Biografía

Dr. Barron began at Albizu University (AU), Miami campus in 2001in the master’s in psychology programs. She was a contributing author to Albizu University first HRSA grant award. This grant award was in response to the Obama White House “Now is the Time” initiative in response to the Sandy Hook Massacre in Newton, Connecticut. The success of the first grant lead to second HRSA grant award: Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) Program Integrated Training for Healthier Communities (ICHC) Program Training for Marriage and Family Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, and School Counseling.

Investigación / Intereses de investigación

Dr. Barron has presented in multiple conferences, including the American Psychological Association, International Council of Psychologists, International Violence and Trauma, Society for Cross Cultural Research, SAFE CHR Coalition for Human Rights Global Conference, South Florida Nurses Association, and Miami Dade College, Medical Campus.

She is an ad hoc peer reviewer for the International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation. Journal of Division 52 (International Psychology). Dr. Barron serves on the following boards: Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Council of Greater Miami, Florida Family Research Network (Bowen), American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, Florida Interest Network, and International Council of Psychologists. Dr. Barron is engaged in numerous outreach activities, and community service appointments providing years of community service to non-profit and grassroots organizations, as well as international disaster crisis counseling.

Her clinical theoretical interest is on Bowen Theory in the treatment of individuals, couples, families, and organizations. Research interests center around Human and Sex Trafficking of Men, Boys, and LGBTQI populations, climate change and human trafficking, and transgender and non-conforming individuals.

Dr. Barron is an alumna of the PhD in Family Therapy program from Nova Southeastern University, M.S., from Barry University with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling, B.S., from Barry University, and a graduate of the St. Thomas University School of Law, Human Trafficking Academy, with a Certificate in Intensive Training in Combatting Human Trafficking.

Dr. Barron recent presentations, APA podcast, publications, and media appearances are on human and sex trafficking of men, boys, and LGBTQI populations, intersectionality of climate change and human trafficking, exploring the experiences of Latina/gender non-conforming and transgender adults, and existential angst among adolescents facing a global warming future.
