The Bachelor of Arts in Exceptional Student Education with a Minor in Autism Spectrum Disorder provides a comprehensive and integrated knowledge base, which consists of current trends in the field and promotes the use of state-of-the-art technology embedded within field-based experiences. The exceptional student education program's goal is to form skilled, competitive, and certified professionals who will ultimately teach and advocate for this population.

The program consists of 132 credits of coursework. The unique curriculum sequence is designed to gradually expose students to the field of exceptional student education (ESE) and highlight the specialized Minor in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The exceptional student education program integrates theoretical and applied content which is sensitive to the cultural and individual differences in all aspects of education, translational research, and hands-on exposure. This quality training program places emphasis on molding professional demeanor, fostering a learning spirit, and modeling the highest ethical standards in an effort to address the growing critical need for professionals in ESE and, more specifically, in ASD.

MINOR IN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

The unique emphasis of the ASD minor is consistent with the identified critical need currently reflected in national policy, as well as the goals, philosophy, and objectives of Albizu University (AU). This program is a good addition to the exceptional student education B.A. and will allow students to acquire a solid theoretical and initial practical knowledge base on the nature of ASD, as well as an understanding of behavioral assessments, diagnostics, management, and the use of instructional techniques to address augmenting socio-emotional interactions and communication systems. This theoretical framework will coincide with a series of field-based experiences necessary to perform teaching duties. Moreover, the use of state-of-the-art technology is embedded within field-based experiences, thus integrating both evidence-based ESE treatments and practice.

This exceptional student education B.A. degree is designed to accommodate recent graduates, parents, and professionals with full-time jobs. To this end, the program may be completed in three (3) to five (5) years. In extreme cases, a student may seek to obtain a maximum of two (2) additional years to complete the program.

  • The program is complementary to the Bachelor of Science in Exceptional Student Education. Students will be able to utilize the strong pedagogic skills achieved in the ESE coursework while pursuing a special interest in the ASD minor and preparing for their certification in this field.
  • Consisting of 15 credits of coursework in ASD, the program’s course content has been infused with multicultural principles and sensitivity toward individuals to further broaden students’ knowledge regarding the various needs of prospective students with ASD. Courses are held in classrooms equipped with modern technological resources and conducted by professors with theoretical and practical expertise in the field of ASD.

Choosing the right university matters.

  • Students must enter the program with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on 4.0 scale or above from previously attended institutions. Students applying with a GPA lower than 2.5 will be granted provisional acceptance into the degree program, contingent upon the completion of a provisional period in the program with a GPA of 2.5 or above. Under these circumstances, students will meet on a monthly basis with their academic advisor to assess their academic progress.
  • Students may transfer a maximum of 60 credits from a two-year accredited program, or a maximum of 90 credits from a four-year accredited program towards this bachelor’s degree. Students who are transferring must have a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Only courses in which the student has obtained a grade of “C” or above will be transferred.
  • Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA or above for the duration of the degree program. To meet graduation requirements, students must maintain a 2.5 GPA in the major itself.
  • A faculty advisor will be available to help in planning students’ academic progress and course selections. Nevertheless, it is the students’ responsibility to become familiar with their respective academic requirements and curriculum.
