Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Industrial/Organizational Psychology

This on-campus program consists of 81 credits and lasts five (5) years.

The objective of our Ph.D. industrial organizational psychology program is to prepare students to become professionals who know how to integrate theory and practice in workplace environments by following a practical scientific model.

The program seeks to make students understand the principles and techniques of design in psychological research and learn how to apply them in workplace environments, in addition to helping them acquire the following:

  • Knowledge and skills to use the scientific method
  • Knowledge to choose and use different research designs and statistical analysis in specific practical situations.
  • Understanding of psychological theories and models and their application in practical situations.
  • Ability to make, adapt, and validate tests.
  • Verbal and written skills to express procedures, results, and research implications.
  • Ability to communicate theoretical analysis and literature review regarding problems related to industrial/organizational psychology.

Graduates of our Industrial Organizational Psychology Doctorate program may apply to obtain professional licenses in Puerto Rico and be employed in the public and private sectors as consultants in organizational design and development, job analysis, recruitment and selection, work environment diagnosis, promotion of work-life balance, stress assessment, and management, employee assessment and assistance programs, and the promotion of positive work environments. Ph.D. I/O psychology may serve as supervisors, managers, vice presidents, and talent managers. They may also work in human capital, recruitment, employee relations, human resources, and organizational change. In addition, graduates may be employed at universities as researchers or professors who will prepare future professionals in this field.

  • Graduates of our doctorate in industrial organizational psychology program may serve as organizational consultants, human resource managers and/or directors, organizational development specialists and/or managers, trainers, recruiters, university professors, researchers, and human resource specialists. Moreover, our graduates can actively contribute to transforming organizations.
  • Our I/O psychology PhD graduates develop teamwork skills, leadership training, and a solid scientific base that translates into applicable knowledge. This allows our interventions to be supported by scientific evidence.

  1. Evidence of having completed a master's degree in social/behavioral science, education, or health from an accredited university.
  2. A master’s degree minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  3. Applicants who did not pursue a major in psychology must pass 15 credits (5 courses of 3 credits each) in psychology to qualify for an admissions assessment for the selected graduate program.
  4. Applicants may request a maximum credit validation of 21 credits from another accredited university. Applicants with a master’s degree from Albizu University (AU) may opt for the program and transfer the relevant credits.
  5. AU reserves the right to admit candidates who do not meet the minimum requirements and will consider the following exceptional admission criteria: a minimum 2.5 GPA. Admitted applicants will have one semester to make satisfactory academic progress applicable to their academic level in order to remain active students in the program for the remainder of the course of study. In addition, they must present evidence of research experience (writing, certifications, etc.).

  1. Results of the Graduate Studies Admission Examination (EXADEP) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Only the scores from exams taken within the last five years will be accepted.
  2. Two (2) letters of recommendation from a teacher, employer, or community leader (in accordance with the AU format).
  3. Negative criminal record certificate, which can be requested online at https://servicios.pr.gov/cap.
  4. Original health certificate.
  5. Proof of hepatitis-B vaccination.
  6. Certificate of Vaccination of the Department of Health (PVAC-3, green form) with original signature of the issuing physician. Applies only to applicants who are 21 years of age or younger at the time of admission. Act No. 25 of 1983 (on immunization) requires that all students 21 years of age or younger, who wish to enter any educational institution in the country, provide an original copy of their PVAC-3 to show that they comply with the minimum immunization requirements.
