Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAEE)

Albizu University’s (AU) Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (BAEE) Program prepares students to teach in Elementary Schools (public schools, private schools, Charter Schools, Parochial Schools, etc.). The unique BAEE includes 124 credits, including a 10 credit Internship; and integrates the study and understanding of human behavior and sensitivity towards culturally diverse populations in the field of education. The availability of day, evening, and hybrid-online classes provides the flexibility and convenience students need to meet other demands of life. An expert group of faculty with real-life experiences teach all classes. Many potential AU students successfully take and pass the College Level Examination (CLEP) so that they earn credit towards their degree with examination performance at the 50th percentile or above. Albizu also awards prior learning and practicum placement towards this undergraduate degree program. A maximum of 60 credits meeting respective GPA and having been completed with a “C’ or better, from a two-year or a four-year accredited institution may be transferred into the BAEE program. In addition, a grade point average of 2.50 on a scale of four points must be maintained in the major in order for a student to meet graduation requirements. As graduates of the program, students receive ESOL Endorsement and the option to obtain Reading Certification by completing two additional courses.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The minimum requirements for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education are:

  • Evidence of having completed high school or an equivalent.
  • High school graduation index, an equivalent, or when transferring from another Institution (a GPA) of 2.5.
  • Two letters of recommendation from a professor, employer or community leader (Official Form).
  • Compliance with additional requirements, as delineated in the Institutional Admission Policy section. After all required documentation has been received, and an interview completed, by the Office of Admissions, the Academic Program Advisors will reach out to you for program direction, advisement, and your BAEE journey!

The BAEE program is designed to accommodate recent graduates, to parents, to professional with a 9 to 5! To this end, the BAEE program may be completed within three, to four, to a maximum of a five-year plan. Under dire circumstances, there is a protocol process of seeking to obtain a maximum of two additional and final years to complete the program.

Accreditations for this program

AU is Middle States Accredited. Graduates typically take the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations to become certified to teach in the State of Florida.

By graduation, students will have satisfied these competencies.

An academic faculty advisor is assigned to all students from the onset of their program, to assist with course selection, and all academic needs and requirements, through graduation… always-encouraging students with their responsibility to be familiar with all of their academic requirements and curriculum.

What can the student do with this title in his/her professional life? What fields or opportunities for employment or research do you provide? *

Many of our graduates become employed in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, thus contributing to the field of education of children in local communities. Other graduates continue their higher education careers by pursuing a master or doctoral degree.

Modality of the program

Various modalities (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile) are included in courses to meet diverse learning styles. Instructional methods include: teacher facilitated lecture, study groups, elements of scholarly research reading and writing, text readings and selected supporting literature, student engagement strategies, oral presentations, power points and verbal and written quizzes/tests. Courses are offered in online, hybrid, and/or face-to-face formats.

No matter the social level, students from other countries attend AU, as well as students that may be your next-door neighbor right here in Miami! There is no particular Albizu student type!

Is this program offered at other universities in the United States or Puerto Rico? If so, how does it differ or stands out from the other options?

With the founder’s mantra Love reaches beyond knowledge, at AU the BAEE Program allows you to be more than a number! The reduced teacher to student ratio allows for smaller classes scheduled at different times during the day. Students and advisors develop very personal and encouraging relationship, through graduation. Advisors are as close as an email, a phone call, a text message or knock on the office door! This sets AU BAEE Program separate and apart from others.

What experience do students have in the program? Theoretical, practical? What kind of skills do they develop? How does it enhance the student’s current title?

Throughout the BAEE Program, workshops are offered by Miami-Dade County Public Schools in preparation for hire. Community experts, all free of charge, present additional lectures supporting multicultural educational and academic theories of learning. Students have the opportunity to join the Kappa Delta Psi International Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Nu Chapter, to network with educators across the globe, in an international organization of over 1.2 million members. The Internship Student Teaching is conducted in a multi-cultural setting to help students develop teaching skills via a real world experience.

How is this program integrated with others at the University

Students in the BAEE Program many times are registered into classes with students in the Bachelor’s of Arts in Exceptional Student Education (BAESE). This allows for further networking and sharing of experiences with their field of study and intended field of work. Many times leading to post graduate friendships.

What is the support of the University during the tenure of the program?

AU does not discriminate against any otherwise eligible student with special needs and/or conditions and who meets program standards. For students with a disability, all reasonable accommodations are protective and must be formally initiated by the student. The AU Tutoring Center provides individualized services for students that include tutoring assistance with course-specific assignments, APA formatting, grammar, syntax, etc. AU schedules and provides fairs, seminars, and open-houses on a number of topics for all students, most times with scrumptious food served, all free of charge. AU schedules and allows for networking, job fairs and searches, and provides insight to various community based organizations and opportunities. The AU Student Government is very visible and works in the best interest of the student and AU. Holidays, birthdays, and special days are always celebrated in our wonderful and multicultural environment.

WHAT ADDITIONAL SKILLS DOES THE STUDENT WHO PARTICIPATES IN THE PROGRAM ACQUIRE?

Via courses, conversations, software programs and aps, all included in their BAEE program, AU students acquire a heighted skill of articulation, improved collegiate level APA writing skills, and many graduate with a self-assurance greater than when they started. Selected courses taken by students require that clinical observations be conducted in public schools settings. This experience provides students with first hand knowledge of the classroom setting and the challenges faced by teachers in today’s demanding work settings.

With what educational/work experience does the faculty of the program count?

Faculty are experts in their fields with current work experience in the classroom. They are required to complete research-based projects, present on academia to targeted audiences, attend and or present at academia related conferences; as well encouraged to join professional work related organizations. Most faculty hold a doctorate or Education Specialist degree. All faculty members are required to hold a minimum of a Master degree with various specializations in the field of Education (e.g., reading, ESOL, Science, Social Studies, etc.).
