Associate Professor and Program Coordinator in the Master's Program for Industrial and Organizational (IO) Psychology - Miami Campus.

Biography

A successful, accomplished, and published scholar-practitioner with more than 30 years of diverse professional experiences, Dr. Carlos Antonio Viera recently served with a local non-profit as Deputy Director for Programs and Evaluation. Previously, serving with Accenture as Manager Strategic Management Consulting, Miami Dade College as the Director for Planning, Policy Analysis and Grant Program Support and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) as the District Director and Executive Director for the Office of Performance Improvement, a direct report to the Chief of Accountability and Systemwide Performance, recognized with a Certificate of Commendation from the Superintendent for his work in strategic planning. Dr. Viera has also provided independent consulting services for several private and non-profit organizations including Inside the School, College Summit, CASEL, National Academic Educational Partners (NAEP) and Performance Associates. He also served as the District Chair, Secondary Student Services for MDCPS, as well as classroom teacher, behavior management teacher, crisis counselor, educational specialist, teacher trainer, graduation coach and supported employment coordinator.

Research / Research Interests

Dr. Viera earned a PhD from Capella University’s School of Education with a specialization in Training and Performance Improvement, completing his doctoral dissertation entitled, School Counselors and Advisors Using Data-Driven Decision Making: Identification and Analysis of Barriers and Enablers. The International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) recognized this study as 2015 Distinguished Dissertation - 2nd Place, as well as having been invited to share his findings during the Carnegie Foundation Summit for Improving Education in 2016 and the APPAM Fall Research Conference in 2018 and awarded the 2015 SanDr. Southmayd Leadership Award by the Dade Counseling Association (DCA). Dr. Viera earned a graduate level Certificate in Educational Leadership from Florida International University (FIU), a Master of Science in Education from the University of Miami, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Education from FIU, earned Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) credential from the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) through Barry University and the SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional) credential. Dr. Viera is often invited to serve as a peer reviewer for professional journals; The Journal of Education, published by Sage and ISPI’s Performance Improvement

Academics, Education, Certifications

Dr. Viera serves on the Board of Directors for ISPI, as Guest and Associate Editor for Performance Improvement Journal (PIJ), and on the Board of Director for the Greater Miami Society for Human Resource Management (GMSHRM), now HR Miami, as the Chair for College Relations, as well as on the Board of Directors for Doctors Charter School, as well as the Steering and Conference Planning Committees for the Community Learning Partnership (CLP) at Barry University, a collaborative effort composed of public, private and charter schools within the Miami Shores area. The CLP is working together to build leadership capacity among its students, enhance professional development opportunities, and provide opportunities for community and service learning. His professional associations also include serving on the Board of Directors and membership on the Leadership Council for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), and co-chair for the Position Development Team, Hispanic/Latino American Critical Issues Network; serving on the Board of Directors and past President for the Florida Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (FASCD), membership in Phi Delta Kappa International; Leadership Miami (Class of 2002) and Leadership Miami Facilitator (Class of 2003); and as volunteer consultant for the Florida Association of Voluntary Agencies for Caribbean Action, Inc. (FAVA/CA) and worked with the Ministry of Education and the Discovery School in Honduras. He also served on the Florida Sterling Council’s Board of Directors and a Team Showcase judge. Dr. Viera has also been nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award and the Outstanding Young Educator ASCD Award by his colleagues. His publications include articles in Performance Improvement Journal entitled, Barriers and Enablers to Data Driven Decision Making by High School Counselors and Advisors, as well as the FASCD Educational Leadership Journal on Using Experiential-Adventure Approach to Develop Enhanced Leadership and Baldrige in Education. He has facilitated countless conversations and presented to audiences at state, national and international venues, also having traveled extensively throughout the world, including North and South America, Europe, North Africa, having visited the Ministries of Education and schools in Australia, Southeast Asia and Canada. He continues to build capacity, as well as supporting others in making strides toward performance excellence by designing, developing, and delivering innovative initiatives and workshop offerings that ignite curiosity and provide new ways of looking at old and recurring challenges. He considers himself as a bridge-builder, aligning high expectations, tools and resources and incentives to help meet the challenges faced by today’s organizations.
