As a full-time faculty member, Professor Lezcano teaches courses for the Psychology and Education Undergraduate programs. Additionally, Professor Lezcano teaches some of the courses included in the Graduate Certificate in Autism. Some of the undergraduate courses taught by Dr. Lezcano are as follows: Group Dynamics, Family Systems, Educational Psychology, Psychology of Adolescence, Psychology of Children, and Psychology of Infancy.

 

Biografía

Dr. Yamila Lezcano is the Co-Director of the Undergraduate Psychology Programs at Albizu University. She holds a doctoral degree in Human Services with a specialization in Children and Families at Risk. She is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and Qualified Clinical Supervisor with a private practice in Miami, Florida. She has training in Parent-Child Psychotherapy and holds several certifications in the field of Infant and Maternal Mental Health. She has extensive experience serving diverse populations, including drug dependency court clients, foster care, and children with developmental disabilities. Dr. Lezcano is a Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor (YMHFA), and the Program Director for the Miami Mental Health Awareness Initiative at Albizu, funded by SAMHSA. Dr. Lezcano is a frequent writer for the Psychology Today, Becoming Resilient blog.

Investigación / Intereses de investigación

Professor Lezcano has presented at various Mental Health Awareness Events held at our institution. She is also very active in our community by conducting seminars and presentations to increase mental health awareness.

Her research interests center around the study of foster parents, children with disabilities, Infant mental health, and mental health literacy.  Currently, Prof. Lezcano serves as Primary Investigator for the Miami Mental Health Awareness Initiative a Grant funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This initiative seeks to train school personnel, who are currently working or interacting with youth ages 6-18, on Youth Mental Health First Aid. The primary focus of this training is to help adults identify risk factors and warning signs associated with mental health challenges commonly experienced in this transition age group.

Dr. Lezcano has specialized training in the fields of Infant Mental Health and Early Childhood Developmental She completed her Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling at Nova Southeastern University, in Ft. Lauderdale, and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton Florida.

 

She holds several certifications from Quality Matters Standards in Higher education for designing and evaluating online courses; some of these certifications are: Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR), Teaching Online Certificate, and Peer Reviewer Course (PRC).

 

Professor Lezcano holds several professional certifications in the field of Infant, Maternal Health, and Mental Health Literacy, some of the certifications include:

Professor Lezcano has written several articles for local newspapers focusing mainly on Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Challenges in Youth with the purpose to raise mental health awareness in our community.

She publishes an article every month for Psychology Today.
