Loans

The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Education. The Financial Aid Office provides applications for the loans. These are low-interest loans for undergraduates and their parents and for graduate students, and repayment begins after you are no longer enrolled in at least a part-time course of study. Helpful information for students and parents on the Direct Loan Program can be found here.

Federal Direct Subsidized Loans and Unsubsidized Loans (San Juan/Miami) – Loan eligibility is based on financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To receive a federal loan, you must be enrolled at least half-time in a degree or certificate program. The subsidized loan is available only to undergraduates and is need-based. The federal government pays all interest prior to repayment as well as during authorized periods of deferment. The unsubsidized loan is available to both graduate and undergraduate students and is not need-based. The borrower is responsible for interest from the day it is disbursed until it is repaid in full.

Federal Direct PLUS Loans for Graduate and Professional Degree Students and for the Parents of Undergraduate Students  (San Juan/Miami) - PLUS loans are federal loans that graduate or professional degree students and parents of dependent undergraduate students can use to help pay education expenses. The PLUS program enables parents to borrow money for educational expenses for each dependent child who is enrolled at least part-time. The maximum amount you can borrow as a parent or a graduate or professional degree student is the cost of attendance (determined by the school) minus any other financial assistance received.
